I love any item that multi-tasks. When I heard about Miche Bags, I knew I would love them. Miche Bags were created by Michelle Romero, with assistance from Annette Cavaness, after she spilled a drink on her favorite purse in 2004. Michelle had a fantastic idea – she created a bag that has changeable covers on the outside, so you never have to dump the entire contents of your purse when you want to carry a bag of a different color.
As a mom, I love this concept. I remember the early days with my son and the resignation I felt when he spit up all over my purse on my way to work. I had no time to run home and switch bags, so it was a quick mop up with baby wipes and away we go, praying all the while that I didn’t miss a spot, or at least that I didn’t run into anyone important on the way in to my desk! Had I known about Miche Bags then, I definitely would’ve bought one.
Not only did the idea of the bag with the changeable outside appeal to me, but when I went to the website to check out the shells, I was hooked. To start with, you need a base bag – there are minis, regular size in black and brown, and also a big bag. Once you have a base bag, you can start to pick your shells. I tried the shell Jen which is a copper and black faux snakeskin cover. To put the shell on, you just wrap it around the bag – it is held on by surprisingly strong magnets.
Miche Bags are sold primarily through at-home parties, but they are also available online and at selected retailers. To find a retailer near you, check the store locator here. The small base bag is very reasonably priced, coming in at $34.95, and earns a high spot on my list of gifts for it’s frugal nature. The shells are also reasonably priced, small shells coming at $24. 94 and $29.95, and I love that you can personalize the shells to make the purses truly your own. This is a gift that isn’t going to cost too much, will be used time and time again, and will help your giftee look fabulous.
I was thrilled to be offered a small base bag and shell to try out for myself. I received the black base bag and the Jen shell, which is copper and black with a faux snakeskin design. When I first opened it, I was truly skeptical about the shell staying on – it is held on by magnets, and it seemed that they weren’t too strong (the shell is easily removable, after all. Since I was suspicious, I really put the bag through the wringer – even more so than I do my own poor beatup purses on a normal day. I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only did the shell stay on throughout my abuse, but it also stayed looking fabulous. My every day purses are pretty dingy looking, but the Miche Bag is still bright and looking great even after I used it.
I like the inside of the base bag – there are 2 pouch pockets on one side and a zipper pocket on the other. This is the perfect amount of organization for me in a purse, because my wallet and agenda slide in while the pouches and pockets keep my cell phone and keys out of the way. Lately I’ve had to carry an inhaler with my fabulous post-pneumonia lungs, and it tucked in nicely as well. I can’t wait until I don’t have to have that anymore! I also love that the shell says its name on the inside – there’s no way you could forget what it’s called, and with a bunch of shells you will still be able to tell them apart. Since the shell is essentially a flat cover, it stores very easily when you’re ready to switch it out with another – much less space than another purse!
The Perfect Gift for…
I will definitely be buying more of the Miche Bag for my family’s presents, and also more shells for myself. The quality of the construction is excellent – you can tell the base bag is sturdy enough to stand up well throughout the use of many shells. I think that the Miche Bag and shells are the perfect gift for any woman. From a new mom with limited time to a fashionista who adores new looks, and all the frugal and busy ladies in between, I think it’s a perfect gift. It will definitely be used by the recipient over and over, and the shells and accessories are not too expensive that she won’t be able to buy more for herself. Of course, you could always buy her more for her birthday and holidays! I especially like this for someone you might normally have trouble buying gifts for – with this purse you’ll know for every gift-giving occasions at least one thing she’d use!
