Overbite by Meg Cabot

Photo of Meg CabotThere are a few reasons why I enjoy books written by Meg Cabot, including Hoosier pride since she was born in Bloomington, Indiana. I enjoy her adult contemporary fiction, but I also enjoy her young adult fiction – The Princess Diaries. When I read her name on the spine of her new work, Overbite, I knew that there was some reason I should recognize it – and yes, there is a reason. She’s the author of the Princess Diaries, All-American Girl, and Avalon High series! With that mystery solved, I delved into the book. I really enjoyed Overbite by Meg Cabot because it wasn’t dependent on having read Insatiable (but did encourage me to read Insatiable), it had unique supernaturals that were based on types we’ve become familiar with, and it was a quick and engrossing read.

Overbite by Meg CabotHaving not read Insatiable, I was not familiar with Meena or the other characters of Overbite before reading it, and I was a little concerned that I would be missing connections during the story. To my pleasure, it seemed to stand alone quite well – I did not feel as though I was left out of the loop, although I could tell that there was a preceding book that I hadn’t read. Though I didn’t have all of the details of the first book, I felt that there was adequate retelling of the important bits, but enough left out so that I do want to read Insatiable (in fact, I’ve already purchased it).

I enjoyed that the supernaturals in Overbite were not exactly the same as in other works. I’ve read (and seen) many books about vampires and werewolves, and it is a better read when the supernaturals have their own quirks particular to the author or work. While you will be familiar with the types of beings in Overbite, there is a whole stand-alone knowledge base about them that is unique to Cabot’s writing. For instance, Lucien is the son of Dracula and is hunted by the Palatine Guard, which is a segment of the Vatican.

The reading progressed easily and quickly – it’s definitely a great book to read on a stormy day with a cup of coffee! It’s one of those page turners that you’d love to just snuggle up with a blanket and absorb. I think that this book will definitely appeal to adults wanting to take a break from the “serious” books we sometimes feel like we have to read (or am I the only one who feels that way?). This will be a great book to read when you’re having a spa day or a mom’s time alone day!

I think I enjoy the author as much as I enjoyed the book this time around! "unique supernaturals that were based on types we’ve become familiar with" I love this, and based a couple of the things you described, I know I would like the world that Cabot has created.

I love it when I can pick up a book in the middle of a series and still enjoy it on it's own. And you're right, sometimes we need a break from serious reading and just need something entertaining! Thanks for being a part of the tour. I'm glad this one was a hit with you!
