Have you ever thought about how grimy life must have been when a bath included lugging pails of water into a basin in your room, when houses were heated solely by fireplace in rooms, and bustles were the peak of fashion? I love reading (maybe you could tell by the reviews?), and one of my favorite genres is historical fiction. I know history fact is available, but it’s just not as neat to me…Anyway, spring cleaning is one of those rituals that started back then – yuck – when households would gather, take everything out of the house and then clean the house from top to bottom, including drapes and linens. Spring cleaning eradicates a year’s worth of dirt from hard-to-clean areas, improves the health of the household, and satisfies our energy burst as we leave the cold of Winter and smell the new start of Spring.
Cleaning Once-a-Year Spots
I’ve already confessed this week that I’m not the best housekeeper, but I’m sure that even Martha Stewart has some areas of her house that she doesn’t clean more often than once a year. Maybe it’s how often she has the air ducts in her house cleaned, but still – there’s something! For us more normal people, there are probably areas that we only clean once a year like curtains, the tops of door frames, window screens, the glass on picture frames, etc. Spring cleaning is a great time to hit those hard-to-remember places when you’re excited to clean. You know this mood won’t last forever, so get as many spots in as you can!
Improving Health With Spring Cleaning
You know how everyone comes down with cold and flu during the winter months? Not only are we all cooped up and breathing the same germy air as the sick members of our family, but we’re all touching our inside surfaces regularly, unlike in summer when we do more different activities. So these germs are just having a heyday bouncing around from one to another of us. Spring cleaning is a great time to clean every surface – a chance like that doesn’t come around often! Those who are allergic to dust will appreciate the extra-thorough cleaning too.
Spring Cleaning Just Feels Right
I don’t know about you, but when I smell Spring in the air I get a little giddy. It’s the smell of a fresh start, a new beginning, new growth and other fabulous things. I’m ready to brush off the stunted growth of winter and get the year moving the right way. But maybe I’m the only one who does that? Actually, I know I’m not the only one because my husband is the same way, but it is possible that no one outside our house feels that way…
So that’s what I think, but I want to know! Why is spring cleaning important to you?
