Gardening as Exercise

Winter Solstice is almost here, which for me means that it’s almost time to start thinking about the garden again. Really, though there isn’t a month that goes by where I don’t think about the garden. This past year, when our baby was not yet 1, I didn’t plant a garden because I didn’t think I would keep up with it. And a lucky thing that was for me, so I didn’t have to pay the gigantic fees of water usage during the drought this past summer. Unfortunately, this January will be rather sedate since I won’t be preparing seedlings for a garden this year either. With us moving during the summer, it just wouldn’t work out.
But the guest on Mamavation TV tomorrow night has a ton of excellent ideas and information about how to turn your backyard into an awesome food source. Self-sufficiency and a hobby farm are also topics that are very important to me, so you can bet I will be there tomorrow night! But I think one of the most awesome things about gardening is that you can grow your own food, know what goes into your food, and you can totally get a work out doing it! When I was pregnant with my second son, I used to love going out to the garden in the early morning and weeding. I would get down on my hands and knees when my back started to feel sore, and just keep going. It was awesome! Of course, even if you’re not pregnant, gardening can be a totally awesome workout. And then once you have your food harvested, you still need to do some canning, and that can burn a lot of calories too, especially if you’re doing blanching and running back and forth – yeah, there’s a lot of work involved, but it’s worth it!
So how did my past week go? I don’t know! I know, weird, right? Well, I didn’t weigh myself this morning, and I only do morning weigh ins, so… oops! I’ll try to remember to update in the morning, but Mondays are super busy mornings for me. But, I do have some awesome news – I ate fantastically last week. My husband told me the other day that he could tell I lost weight, and my mom asked me how much weight I’ve lost! Even if they’re just being nice, it still makes me feel totally psyched
Oh – and Zumba was totally awesome last week! The only problem is that I can only go on nights when my husband is not going in to work early the next day, so I can’t go as often as I would like and I don’t know what his schedule will be until he gets home from work, which can be totally annoying.
But – we’re working on #12DaysofFitmas in #mamavation, and you should totally check it out. Also, I applied to be Mamavation Mom here and I would love it if you could tweet:
“Hey @bookieboo! I want (@way2gomom) to be the next #Mamavation Mom. She has my support! http://bit.ly/aorv3Y”
Proving that you have an online support network is super important when they’re picking the next Mamavation Mom, so I could totally use the show of support from each of you! If you’re only on Facebook, please post on your wall why you think I would make a great Mamavation Mom, tag me and link here: http://bit.ly/aorv3Y.
So that’s what’s up with me, Mamavation, and gardening as exercise. What is your favorite hobby that also counts as a workout?
