I mentioned recently that I am undertaking the ProBlogger 31 Days to Build a Better Blog challenge this month with a group of my friends who also write blogs. Today is day 1, and the challenge is to write an elevator pitch. I have written an elevator pitch for my blog before, so at first my plan was to just use the same one. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that it has been quite a while since I wrote that and my direction as a blogger may have changed since then. Instead of just blowing off this day (and thus setting myself up for failure by not taking day 1 seriously), I decided to go back to the drawing board and just check to see if I’m still writing in the same direction as my old elevator pitch.
Here’s the old elevator pitch:
Just Joanna celebrates parents, simplifies every day living, and encourages positive relationships.
Then it was time for some awesome brainstorming. At first I started looking for mindmapping apps on my phone (because that is clearly the logical step), but after I was not finding what I wanted, I moved on to a different task in my day. Later in the day, I started working on Coggle which is actually a web app mind mapping tool. I think it worked fairly well, I came up with this:
This is slightly different than what I previously had done with my brainstorming session – there are some new and notable categories that really didn’t play a part in my blog before. While I still love the first elevator pitch because it helped me narrow my blog down from a broad base of subjects to tighter writing for a more specific audience (which also resulted in more hits and better search engine traffic), it is not quite pulling its weight anymore.
So I put together what I had found in my brainstorming with my old elevator pitch, tweaked it here and there, asked my husband if it made my butt look big, etc, and I was left with this:
JustJoanna simplifies healthy and toxin-free living for busy parents on a budget, data science for bloggers and social media professionals, and book reviews for curious book lovers.
I took it one step farther and made it into a quick tagline which I could use on my business cards:
JustJoanna makes healthy living, data science & book selections easier for busy parents
And finally, because I just cannot resist, I made a sweet little word cloud with it:
Do you have an elevator pitch for your blog? When is the last time you worked on it?
