I had post partum depression after I had my first child. It was awful. At first I didn’t want to admit it. And then when I did finally say something it was to my son’s pediatrician. And their advice was to nap when the baby naps. That’s fine and all, but it’s much easier said than done. Especially if you’re working full-time like I was at the time. Two weeks later I had a huge break down. I called my grandmother and sobbed on the phone to her. That convinced me to go in and see my midwife, who did help me.
This time I’d like to avoid post partum depression. I don’t think I can handle a three year old, a newborn and PPD. And I don’t want to have to handle all three. I’ll stick with just the two kids, thanks. So this time around I have several layers of attack against PPD. Here’s what I’m doing:
– Keeping my support network strong. I love the group of moms that I socialize with and I know any one of them would be able to help me through a hard point if I give them a call.
– Taking prescription medication. As much as I hate doing it, I know this gives me a great chance of avoiding the PPD symptoms that I already have felt coming in.
But the method of attack that I’m doing that most people wouldn’t do is consuming the placenta.
I know, you can say ew if you want to. I say it all the time.
But there are great benefits to consuming the placenta. In fact, many women are now encapsulating their placenta so that they can receive the benefits without the ew factor.
I have several friends who have taught me the value of whole, raw foods. After research, I decided that the best way for me to consume the placenta is raw. So I froze it, cut it into pieces and have a placenta smoothie each day.
Placenta Smoothie Recipe
– Frozen Placenta
– 1/4 – 1/2 cup Skim milk (my gallbladder is still not well)
– 3-4 frozen strawberries
– A small handful of frozen blueberries
– Half a banana
Mix in blender. I use the Crush Ice mode on my blender. I had to tweak it a little bit – the first day it was more of a milkshake and less of a smoothie. Today I didn’t add enough strawberry. It’s a little hard to drink if you don’t have the ingredients right, but I just remind myself of why I’m doing it.
Benefits of Placenta Consumption
– Helps to avoid post partum depression
– Energy boost (seriously, I can attest to this one for sure and it’s especially helpful since my husband is back at work)
– Less post partum bleeding (placenta was used to stop hemorrhaging before and now the bleeding slows way down. Trust me – I only had it for 51 hours after birth.)
After I saw these three benefits, I knew it was good for me. And so far it’s working.
